The Ecology of the Age River

Natural Balance – Our Shared Responsibility

The Age River is not only of cultural and historical value but also an important ecological resource. The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre has studied the river’s water quality along its entire course, and the results are encouraging – overall, the water quality is good, and most parameters meet high-quality standards.

What Do the Scientific Measurements Show?

Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Dissolved Oxygen (O₂), BOD₅, Ammonium Nitrogen (N/NH₄) – high-quality level

Total Nitrogen (Nkop) – slightly above the norm, but acceptable

Total Phosphorus (Pkop) – just above the high-quality threshold

What Threatens the Age River Today?

Sediment imbalance – too much or too little flow in the riverbed

Beaver activity – alters the natural flow and shape of the riverbanks

Fish migration barriers – fallen trees, blocked channels, or rocks hinder fish movement

Degradation of trout habitats – The THS (Trout Habitat Score) method reveals that in several areas, the habitat is less suitable for trout due to human and environmental impacts

What Can You Do?

Protect nature and get involved:

Share photos and observations in the section “Nature and Ecology”

Report in the forum about barriers or pollution in the river

Assess trout habitats – check for inaccessible riverbanks

Together We Can Help the Age River!

Maintaining ecological balance is only possible through cooperation – among scientists, local residents, anglers, and nature lovers. Every observation, every report is one step closer to a healthier Age River.
